Manildra Harwood Sugars celebrates 25th anniversary

Sunshine sugarThis weekend Manildra Harwood Sugars (MHS) celebrates a major milestone with the achievement of supplying the Australian market for 25 years with a range of high quality refined sugar products.

MHS was founded in 1988 when the Australian owned companies New South Wales Sugar Milling Co-operative Limited and the Manildra Group of Companies joined forces to form a partnership to produce, distribute and market refined sugar products throughout Australia. The sugar industry in New South Wales had been operating for well over 110 years at the time and Manildra is one of Australia’s icons established in 1952 with the purchase of a single flour mill. The Manildra Group of Companies has undergone steady growth and is now the largest user of wheat for industrial purposes in Australia, processing some one million tonnes of wheat per annum and has a highly
diversified product range.

The sugar refinery, which is located at the Harwood sugar mill in the picturesque Clarence Valley, was officially opened on 28 September 1989 and since then has produced over five million tonnes of refined sugar and related products. It is one of the largest employers in the area and is a major contributor to the economic and social prosperity of the region.

In 2012 MHS was the first refiner in the world to be awarded Bonsucro certification, the global metric standard for sustainable sugar production which aims to improve the social, environmental and economic sustainability of sugarcane production. To add to this, MHS is now the only 100% Australian owned refinery – something that we are very proud of.

The long-term success of MHS is a testament to the foresight our founders had over 25 years ago as well as those today who continue to proudly uphold the company’s values.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our employees, customers and suppliers who have contributed to the success of MHS over the past 25 years and look forward to a sustainable long term future.

To celebrate this milestone, amongst many other activities planned, we are having an Open Day on Saturday, 11th October in which all past and present employees, grower suppliers and other industry participants are welcome to come and take a tour of the refinery.
